*The Social Reckoning* opened to $5.5 million in North America, a weak start for Aaron Sorkin's return to Facebook. Critics were split, and audiences stayed home.

## The Box Office Reality

The R-rated drama earned an estimated $5.5 million from 2,606 theaters, [according to ABC News](https://abcnews.com/amp/Entertainment/wireStory/mommy-tops-box-office-275m-social-reckoning-opens-137178115?ref=zilck.com). Variety had projected [$7 million to $8 million](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/social-reckoning-flops-other-mommy-leads-box-office-1236908161/?ref=zilck.com). Thursday previews were soft at about $650,000, and forecasts dropped toward $6 million before the weekend. Jessica Chastain's horror film *Other Mommy* took the top spot with $27.5 million.

Overseas figures conflict across outlets. Variety reported [$3.5 million](https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/social-reckoning-flops-other-mommy-leads-box-office-1236908161/?ref=zilck.com) from 29 markets, for a $9 million worldwide start. IGN reported [$17.69 million](https://www.ign.com/articles/resident-evil-overtakes-weapons-as-zach-creggers-highest-grossing-film-the-social-reckoning-bombs?ref=zilck.com) internationally and called the film "a certified bomb." The budget is also reported inconsistently, at $30 million or $40 million, so treat the final tally as unsettled. USA Today put it bluntly: moviegoers are "unfriending" the film.

## What the Film Is About

Sorkin writes and directs. He calls it a companion piece rather than a direct sequel to *The Social Network*. The story follows Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and *Wall Street Journal* reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) as they expose the company's internal research. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, replacing Jesse Eisenberg.

## What Critics Said

Reviews were mixed.

- **The New York Times:** The film isn't about "beginnings, friendships or even Zuckerberg," but about how platforms "rewired our brains."
- **IGN:** A "sharp script" with "workman-like direction," and a film that "feels late to its own party."
- **Vulture:** "Surprisingly fun, until it isn't."
- **Patch:** An "ambitious and often thought-provoking companion piece."
- **Los Angeles Times:** "Cursory and hollow."

## Why It Struggled

The film has a few problems that a $5.5 million opening makes visible.

First, it covers ground audiences already know. The Facebook Files broke in 2021, and the [LA Times](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2026-10-09/social-reckoning-review-aaron-sorkin-jeremy-strong-allen-white-mikey-madison?ref=zilck.com) said the movie recounts "foul Facebook choices we already know." Second, the cast is strong, but Zuckerberg is mostly sidelined. Vulture describes him rehearsing for a Congressional appearance rather than driving the story. Third, the brand is a burden. Comparisons to David Fincher's 2010 film are unavoidable, and Sorkin is now directing his own script.

There's also a hard truth about timing. Many Americans already feel the harms the film dramatizes. A story that confirms what viewers believe is rarely urgent enough to buy a ticket for. Horror dominated opening weekend, a genre that has been strong all year.

## Should You See It?

Go if you value dialogue-driven dramas and performances. Madison's turn as Haugen is the most consistently praised element, and Strong's detached Zuckerberg is the most debated. Skip it if you want the energy of *The Social Network*, because most critics say it doesn't recapture that film.

The film could still find a second life on streaming, where talky, topical dramas often do better. Until then, its theatrical run reminds us that a famous subject and a famous writer don't guarantee a crowd.
