Starbucks Just Made Your Morning Coffee Way More Protein-Packed

Starbucks is officially jumping on the protein bandwagon, and honestly, it's about time. The coffee giant announced today that they're testing protein cold foam in select U.S. locations, marking a major shift toward health-conscious beverages.
CEO Brian Niccol shared some fascinating insights about what sparked this innovation:
"I was watching people coming to our stores, they would get three shots of espresso over ice. And in some cases, they pull their own protein powder out of their bag, or in other cases, they have a protein drink, like a Fair Life and they'd pour that into their drink".
His response? "I'm like, well, wait a second, we can make this experience better for them".
The test features a sugar-free vanilla latte topped with protein banana cold foam, delivering at least 15 grams of protein per drink. What's exciting is that customers can add this protein boost to any cold foam flavor.
This move isn't just trendy—it's strategic. With nearly 18 million Americans expected to be taking GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic by 2029, protein intake has become crucial for maintaining muscle mass. Niccol specifically mentioned targeting diverse consumer groups, from "20-year-old males" to "50-year-old females and people taking GLP-1s".
Starbucks isn't new to the protein game internationally—they already launched a successful 20-gram protein RTD coffee range in the UK last year. But this marks their return to protein beverages in the U.S. since discontinuing their Vivanno shakes in 2018.
The timing couldn't be better, as the "proffee" (protein + coffee) trend continues gaining momentum on social media. Niccol hinted the rollout is imminent:
"It's not one of those things that's years away. It's months away".
