The FBI received nearly 860,000 complaints of internet-related crime in 2024, but only about 30% of those disclosed an actual financial loss — meaning the true scale is almost certainly far larger. Cyber-enabled fraud alone accounted for 83% of all reported losses, totaling $13.7 billion, while cryptocurrency-related investment scams drove more than $6.5 billion in losses on their own.
The human cost is equally striking. Victims over the age of 60 filed the greatest number of complaints and suffered the highest financial losses of any demographic, totaling $4.8 billion, a 43% increase from 2023. These are people who built their savings over a lifetime, now being systematically targeted by AI-generated voice clones, deepfake video calls, and emotionally manipulative scams engineered with machine precision.
How AI Made Scams Undetectable
For years, cybercrime had a tell: broken English, implausible storylines, a vague sense that something was off. Those days are gone. A KnowBe4 analysis of 272,000 phishing emails between September 2024 and February 2025 found that 82.6% showed evidence of AI use — a sign of just how quickly fraudulent communications have evolved in sophistication and scale.
Voice cloning technology has made phone scams exponentially more dangerous. The Silence Making It Worse

Record-breaking annual losses are absorbed as background noise — rarely earning the congressional attention or public outrage the numbers demand. The FBI's own operations director, B. Chad Yarbrough, acknowledged in the IC3 report that despite aggressive enforcement actions in 2024 — including dismantling fraud syndicates, shutting down scam call centers, and distributing thousands of ransomware decryption keys — losses still climbed by a third.
Romance scam victims, in particular, often resist accepting they've been deceived even when confronted with clear evidence, because the manipulation targets emotional vulnerability rather than technical naivety. What Needs to Change

The same industry leaders channeling hundreds of billions into AI infrastructure in 2026 have a proportional responsibility to invest in defenses that protect the people this technology claims to serve.

AI's economic story is genuinely complex. It's accelerating productivity, transforming healthcare, and reshaping entire industries. But the $16.6 billion in reported cybercrime losses represents a concrete, measurable harm that is accelerating now — not a speculative future disruption.
